Building Work Skills for Life after Incarceration

In order to prepare inmates for re-entry into the workforce after their time is served, the New Mexico Corrections Department instituted a program to help inmates earn a National Career Readiness Certificate. Skill-specific training from KeyTrain is available to help participants boost their WorkKeys scores.

- Reduced recidivism among parolees
-  Recidivism rates for program participants is 33% vs. 44% for the general population.

- KeyTrain has greatly increased subject retention, especially in math and reading skill areas.

- Reduced incarceration time – Any inmate who earns a New Mexico Career Readiness Certificate and obtains a GED gets a sentence reduction of 30 days.

"We have used many computer -based educational tools over the years. We have seen them come and go, and frankly our opinion of a product, as professionals in the education of inmates, doesn't mean much. What matters is the opinion, use and results of the end user - our inmates. I can say without hesitation, that the KeyTrain product is the best system we have ever used because the inmates love it, use it, and we're getting very positive educational outcomes from it. We simply can't keep them off the computers when they're using KeyTrain!"

George Reimlinger – Educational Director, Corrections, State of Indiana

It's no secret that many inmates have special learning needs that traditional education methods have simply not addressed.  Correctional educators have found KeyTrain to be a natural fit in their efforts to provide education methods that allow short-term successes, interactivity and self-paced learning.  KeyTrain has successfully equipped inmates with workplace-based skills that make them more employable once released.  WorkKeys® and the National Career Readiness Certificate provide these employable inmates with the credentials they need to demonstrate their skill levels to employers - this is why so many correctional systems use KeyTrain and WorkKeys in their pre-release programs.

The Louisiana Department of Safety and Corrections in conjunction with the community college system:  64% of exiters assessed with WorkKeys gained a Louisiana Work Ready Certificate after using KeyTrain in a pre-release program. Department of Corrections has been using KeyTrain for several years as their primary educational tool for inmates and WorkKeys testing for certification before release.

New Mexico Corrections
selected KeyTrain as their primary computer-based curriculum for adult education, vocational transitions and inmates taking college courses. The program is meeting one of its primary goals: for inmates to receive a career readiness certificate.  Other results of the program include an 11% reduction in recidivism and reduced prison sentences.

Colorado, Indiana and New Mexico
are currently involved in programs statewide for juvenile corrections using KeyTrain curriculum. Many of the GED programs in these facilities also use KeyTrain as the main curriculum.

Illinois, Colorado and New Mexico
are using the system to remediate and certify juvenile and adult inmates prior to release.  The inmates use KeyTrain curriculum to prepare for WorkKeys. When released, they will transition into the Workforce Development program where they can earn the NCRC/CRC.

Arizona Department of Juvenile Justice
uses KeyTrain as part of their intake process for about 15 juveniles per week.  The educational team, students and counselors review job interests based on ACT's Job Profile Database.  The students  use KeyTrain in labs during specified times during the week to work on individual educational plans set by their counselor.

In West Virginia
juvenile and adult inmates use ACT's Job Profile Database to set career goals, then upgrade skills during class time with KeyTrain. This program has a 100% success rate of inmates reaching their pre-set career goal level based on the WorkKeys scale.
