In
today’s globally competitive
economy, businesses across the
country are demanding higher
skilled workers. Workforce
development and WIA systems have
met this ever-increasing
challenge head-on with WorkKeys®
system,
The National Career
Readiness Certificate, and
KeyTrain®, providing
career-ready candidates to
business and industry in their
local areas.
PeeDee
Workforce Investment Board,
Florence, South Carolina
was recognized by the U.S.
Department of Labor for its
innovative ways in meeting the
needs of area businesses by
getting potential employees
work-ready. Only 18 WIBs in the
nation were chosen for this
recognition.
One of the essential tools the
PeeDee Workforce Investment
Board has implemented is
WorkKeys assessments and
KeyTrain. The system helps
cut the cost of recruiting,
selecting, hiring and training
employees by identifying key
generic skills, such as reading
for information, and applied
math. The positive response
they have received from business
and industry indicates how much
it was needed. McLeod Health –
one of the largest area
employers voiced its approval of
the program, citing the number
of people trained at one time
and the fact that the program
places people in careers, not
just jobs.
The
Peninsula Workforce Development
Center in Virginia and
Thomas Nelson Community College
(TNCC) created a “pipeline”
program using WorkKeys
assessments to effectively
screen potential candidates and
assess the skills relative to
the skills needed for jobs with
local companies. TNCC
created an open-entry-open-exit
KeyTrain Learning Lab, which is
available for
use by the
community. Local
companies like the program
because it helps them
effectively fills job openings.
This project’s success resulted
in an unsolicited federal grant
of $2 million from the
Department of Labor.
The
Southeast Development Group,
Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The Tennessee Department of
Labor & Workforce Development
selected the Chattanooga
Community to implement the first
model leading to a statewide,
cross-industry,
cross-occupational portable
skills credential, the Tennessee
CRC.
The effort
involves the Southeast Tennessee
Workforce Investment Board, the
Chattanooga Area Chamber of
Commerce and Chattanooga State
Technical Community College, and
is endorsed by many area
organizations, including support
by KeyTrain. The
partnership achieved is
remarkable. This
community-wide project has
received such great results that
it was expanded to a tri-state
region in Georgia, Alabama and
Tennessee for economic and
workforce development.
Indiana Department of Workforce
Development (DWD):
All WIA regions and partner
agency offices around the state
use KeyTrain with customers to
prepare them for the WorkKeys
assessments and the CRC.
The DWD has consistently chosen
KeyTrain as the favored WorkKeys
curriculum since the inception
of their Indiana Career
Readiness Certificate in 2003.
“Our staff and our customers
simply like KeyTrain better
because of it’s easy to use
interface, excellent content and
superb customer service”. Pat
Miller – Former Office Manager –
East Central Opportunities (DWD
Regional Operator), Muncie, IN.
